Two men die in Morecambe social club fire


Two men have died after a fire at a social club in the West End of Morecambe.

Fire fighters were called to the Gordon Club on Springfield Street after the blaze began on the ground floor on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said that two men rescued from the building died a short time later.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire.

A total of 10 fire engines from Morecambe, Lancaster, Bolton-le-Sands, Carnforth, Silverdale and Garstang, and crews from Cumbria raced to the scene after the emergency call just after 2.40pm.

Police, ambulance and air ambulance helicopter also attended.

The area was sealed off and road closures were in place. Police advised people to avoid the area where possible.

By 5.30pm four fire engines remained at the scene and fire fighters were expected to remain there overnight.

A police spokesman said: "A joint investigation into the cause of the blaze is now underway between police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the two men at this time.

"Together with our colleagues at the fire service we are now in the process of trying to establish the cause of the fire and those enquiries are on-going.

"Thank you for your understanding and support while we and our partners from the fire service and ambulance service dealt with this tragic incident."
